Wesley Jacobs
Wesley Jacobs has enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a tubist.
Maestro Sixten Ehrling appointed Wesley Jacobs Principal Tubist of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 1970 (Mr. Jacobs was the third person to hold this position since the orchestra’s founding in 1914). Mr. Jacobs retired from the DSO in 2008.
Wesley Jacobs was raised in Los Angeles, California
where he studied tuba at the University of California at Long Beach. He
continued his studies at the Juilliard School, during which time he
performed with the National Orchestra in New York City.
Mr. Jacobs was principal tubist of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra from 1968 until 1970. During that period he performed Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen with the SFO.
Mr. Jacobs' teaching positions have included The Oberlin Conservatory and Wayne State University. He is in demand as a teacher, consultant and lecturer throughout the United States.
Mr. Jacobs received the University of California's Lifetime Achievement in Music/Distinguished Artist Award. This award recognizes his work with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Opera Orchestra, and the popular music group The Carpenters.
Mr. Jacobs attended California State University at Long Beach, Long Beach City College, The Music Academy of the West and the Juilliard School of Music in New York City.
Mr. Jacobs is president of Encore Music Publishers.
